Anselmo
e Renato Guidi

Anselmo Guidi was born in Castelnovo ne’ Monti on the 27th of October 1898. Son of Lorenzo Guidi and Marcellina Moratti, he married Benilde Giovani in Castelnovo ne’ Monti on the 23th of August 1928.
Anselmo worked as a farmer for the Capanni family of Castelnovo and he lived near a place called Maestà. The family soon expanded with the birth of Maria, Renato, Lorenzo and Luisa.
Being of anti-fascist ideas, Anselmo showed up at the “Casa del Fascio” (literally the House of the Fascists) together with his son Renato on the 8th of October 1944, in order to obtain the pass, which would have given him the permission to move freely around the area. Detained for a day, they were later taken to Felina, from where the next day they continued by bus to Fossoli’s sorting camp.
His daughter Luisa remembers the passage of these eighty men along via Roma and the exchange of goodbyes with her father and brother from the window is the last memory she has of them being alive.
The family’s life became much more difficult. Their house was confiscated by the Germans and the children had to move out, while Lorenzo and Benilde stayed in order to look after the animals.
The return of a survivor from Khala, Guido Ruffini, twin brother of Pierino Ruffini, for whom today we have laid a “pietra d’inciampo” (literally stumbling block) in memory, gave them the confirmation that Anselmo and Renato were both dead and also brought them Anselmo’s wallet.
In a document compiled by the Soviets who freed this area of Germany, Guido Anselmo’s name appears in the list of the dead. He died due to heart failure.
After the death of his son Renato, presumably due to starvation on the 6th of March 1945, Anselmo passed away a few days after his son, as it appears in the documents sent by the International Red Cross.
Both were buried in mass graves in Kahla’s cemetery.
The family’s conditions after the war were critical, they couldn’t work as farmers anymore and they only survived because of Benilde’s work as a laundress until they got accommodation from the municipality and employment at the local hospital.
After a meeting with Paola, a grandchild of the family, we pieced together the deportee’s path, the symbol of the great injustice endured by the civilian population during the war period.
Going again through the personal and family events of Anselmo and Renato has forced us to analyse a tragic period of our territory, becoming aware of something which we had never taken into consideration before, thinking of history as something far from our everyday life.
History is not only made up of great battles and famous politicians, but also of common people who had modified the course of events with simple gestures of protest.
(The following text is the result of the students’ imagination)
“Can a seventeen-year-old boy live here, far from home? Exhausting work, scarce food, hours in the dark, bent over this steel, for this cursed war; we fight from these tunnels forced to serve ideals that do not belong to us.
Fear. Cold. Wounds. I feel my body strongly searching for the light, I see my limbs hanging asthenenous, moved only by the hope of seeing my homeland, my mountains, my friends and of embracing my mother again.
They don’t tell us anything. The only words they say to us are insults shouted in an unknown language, I don’t understand why they hit me, why they made me a slave, forced to eat on the ground like dogs, what am I guilty of?
Maybe to still believe in God and not in the Führer.
My opaque eyes look around, searching for some other colour than black and smoke, my ears hear the crying of brothers, the thunder of weapons. My nose perceives the acrid smell of iron and fire; I turn a cry to the sky, a last gasp, I envy those bodies that lie at my feet, in dying of the day I now flee, where they can’t hit me, where soft collars in golden rows bow to the caress of the wind, a slight flake of pity rests on the spasm.
A body falls, free in a forever smile of balance in the eternity of a heartbeat; a living man, buried by the zero harvest harvested in the impetus of the soul that screams, is silent.”
Anselmo e Renato Guidi
