Dino
Peretti

EN
Dino Peretti was born in Castelnovo ne’ Monti on June 13th 1922, son of Adelmo and Verina Vasirani. He was a farmer who lived in Fariolo, a district of Castelnovo. At the age of 18 he was conscripted to compulsory military service, where he was enlisted in the border guard and sent to Piedicolle, a place that, at the end of the war, would become Slovenia. On April 13th 1941, he married Lina Ferrari.

He was captured on September 9th 1943 and deported to Kassel where, despite being a military prisoner protected by the Geneva Convention, he was meant to do forced labour in Stalag IX A. He died in Kassel, on April 19th 1944, as a victim of an aerial bombardment. He is buried in the cemetery of Frankfurt am Main (department 6,To 200, Gr.VII). As Dino was an IMI,  we have a more complete documentation, from the archives of the Red Cross, than civilian deportees, which allows us to reconstruct what happened to him after his capture.

– Personal details, started at the beginning of his imprisonment in 1943 with all the correct personal details, includes information about what happened after his capture, including a note with his date of death.

– A document from the Municipality of Kassel, dated July 1946, containing the list of names of the prisoners who died in the Kassel camp. This document certifies how and when he died and where he  is buried.

– Original German death certificate, which is from 1948. It is a very incomplete document because it reports only the name and the date of birth, with no other personal information.

– Official death certificate, given by the Italian Ministry of Defense in 1955 and registered in the registry office of Castelnovo ne’ Monti.

– A death certificate from the municipality of Kassel, dated 1958, which only gives us the name and the Place of burial, Frankfurt on Main.

The most important element was found thanks to the family and to the interest with which they followed our project of the “Stumbling Stones”. Today we can read some letters written by Dino and addressed to his loved ones during his imprisonment in Kassel. We can personally see with our own eyes, his handwriting and identify with questions and worries as a man and as a boy, who thought about his family, and his home and who wanted to return.

FR
