Ermete
Zuccolini

September 1909 in Castelnovo ne’ Monti geboren.

Ermete Zuccolini was born in Castelnovo ne’ Monti on the 7th of September 1909, son of Ageo and Angiolina Mazzi, it was a family of six children: five girls and one boy.

We went to the local registry office of Castelnovo ne’ Monti and found his personal  record which showed that he worked as a carpenter and that his workshop was located only a few metres from his home. In the winter of 1942 he married Bruna Fabbiani. At first the couple lived in Via Vittorio Veneto and later they moved to 133 Via al Castello. Ermete and Bruna had two children: Carmen, born in April 1943, who  was only two years old when her father was arrested and Claudio who had never met his father because he was born  after his deportation. According to the military records Ermete was called up on January 14th 1941 to serve as a telegraph operator in the Third Engineer Regiment, First Battalion, First Telegraph Company. Like the other deportees from Castelnovo ne’ Monti, he went to the Casa del Fascio (today the Theatre Bismantova) under the pretext of collecting a pass that would allow him to travel freely outside the town, and there he was detained. After passing through Fossoli’s transit camp, he was assigned to forced labour in the tunnels of Kahla.

Mr. Zannoni, a fellow resident of Castelnovo and deported to Kahla together with many others, began to keep a list of his fellow citizens who died in the camp due to hardship, malnutrition, and abuse during his imprisonment.  On this small sheet of paper, which he brought back with him to Italy after liberation, the name of Ermete Zuccolini appears.

Ermete died on the  first of April 1945, an approximate date shown on the death certificate. He was only 35 years old. We met his daughter Carmen who decided to share  some  memories of her father with us, especially his skills as a carpenter, a passion and ability inherited by his son Claudio who today delights in woodworking. In 1995 the family ,with other relatives of the Castelnovo’s deportees, personally went to Kahla to see the place where their loved ones died.

Today in Kahla’s cemetery a Plaque was laid in memory of all the people of Castelnovo ne’ Monti who died in these places.
